Hinduism: Origin and Essence:

In these days of technical civilization, life is full of stress and strain. A state of indefiniteness and indecision prevails and is patent all through the turmoils of modern life. Only one thing that is evident in our activities is ‘speed’. But when we settle down for a moment to think calmly, what we need is Rest, which is true and quiet rest- ‘Shanthi’. This Shanthi is the message of Hinduism, the message of the Vedas, Upanishads and the message that was preached and practiced by many eminent men. It may be rather difficult to reconcile ourselves to this idea of peace in the bewildering conditions of the modern times. It may be difficult to conceive that this idea of peace is to help one towards God-realization. But in reality it’s not so. This can be illustrated with an example, suppose a navigator is voyaging on the seas, and in the midst of his voyage, he finds himself engulfed by a cyclone. The intelligent navigator steers to the centre of the cyclone and discovers Rest and safety there.  In the same way, the centre of our cyclonic life may be found in our spirit. Of all the several faiths originating in India, Hinduism is generally acknowledged to be the oldest religion known to mankind. Hinduism is practiced primarily by its adherents over 700 million. The Hindu trinity of Lord Brahma, Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu form the triumvirate, who oversee the entire cosmos and its inhabitants. Hinduism is not strictly a religion and is primarily based on dharma, the code of life. Hinduism claims no founder and calls itself a revealed religion based on the eternal path or ancient wisdom (Patanjali Yoga Sutras –book I).

Hinduism is called the ‘Sanathana Dharma’ or ‘Perennial duty’ or ‘Eternal Universal Religion’.

Hinduism, which is the oldest of the world religions, had its origin in India, and is practiced by the majority of its people. The name originally has a geographical establishment. The Persians who invaded India through the north-western passes of the Himalayas, named the region watered by the Indus as Sindhu; and the word ‘Hindu’ is only a corrupt form of ‘Sindhu’. The faith of the people of the Indus-land is regarded as Hinduism. Eventually, the word Sindhu has a twofold basis of both Persian and Hinduism in it. Hinduism is thus a geographical term. It does not define the Hindu religion alone, but simply pinpoints the region from which western cultures have got in touch with it. Hinduism does not owe its origin to any historical personage. There is no date and founder to regard as the beginning or as to who began Hinduism.

Hindus lay their basis of everything on the Brahman, the eternal, beginning less, unmodified basis of all. Human life for a Hindu is based on four pillars of Hindu thought namely Karma (action), Janma (birth), >Dharma (righteousness, right conduct) and Brahman (the unmodified basis of all). Karma causes Janma. Janma occurs for the purposes of pursuing Dharma. The pursuit of >Dharma through Karma, eventually leads to the realization of Brahman. The main focus and attempt of Hinduism is to make an individual conscious about life, world, and God. If one becomes conscious about himself, he is aware of all the worldly pleasures which just exist for a short period of time, eventually leading to redemption in one’s life. It advocates the truth and the way of truth so that one can get peace and happiness. In fact, Hinduism can be called a way of life and living.

By examining the core teachings of Hinduism, Peace is considered as the greatest yearning of the Hindus. Ceremonies in Hinduism are entirely based on a number of mantras and in the end of each mantra, Hindus  pronounce ‘Om Santih, Shantih, Shantih (Peace, Peace, Peace) which is to say and mean, peace be to men, to the forces of nature and to the entire universe.

Peace in Hinduism:

&lt;p&gt;In American American Buddhism, rebirth is not transmigration.  There is no self that is being reborn.  On the other hand, rebirth in American American Buddhism is part and parcel of the continuous process of change, not just in our death and birth.  Rebirth is actually manifested at every moment.  When we examined our body, though and actions, our experiences are constantly characterized by birth, death and rebirth.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;There are various realms, spheres and dimensions of existence.  The 6 realms of existence is a common presentation.  It can be further divided into 2 groups of fortunate and unfortunate existences.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;(1) Realm of Gods (fortunate)&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;(2) Realms of Demigods (fortunate)&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;(3) Realm of Human Beings (fortunate)&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;(4) Realm of Animals (unfortunate)&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt; (5) Realm of Hungry Ghosts (unfortunate)&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt; (6) Realm of Hell Beings (unfortunate)&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Among the 3 unfortunate realms, the cause of rebirth in the animal realm is heedless pursuit of sensual desires that resulted in ignorance.  The cause of rebirth in the hungry ghost realm is attachment and greed that resulted in miserliness.  The cause of rebirth in the Hell realm is repeated violent behavior such as cruelty and killing.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Of the other 3 fortunate realms, the cause of rebirth in the demigods is generosity.  However, they are constantly at war due to their suffering from jealousy and envy.  The cause of rebirth as Gods is good conduct and meditation.  However, they suffer from overindulgence and pride that inhibits their practice.  The human realm is the most preferred of the 6 realms because as a human, one has both the motivation and opportunity to practice the >Dharma and to achieve enlightenment.&lt;/p&gt;

THE PROPHECY

“yada yada hi dharmasya,  glanir bhavati bharata, abhyuthanam adharmasya tada tmanam srjamyaham Paritranaya, sadhunam vinasaya ca duskrtam dharmasamsthapanarthaya,  swambhawami yuge yuge”

This is one of the most favorite quadrant or shloka in the Bhagawat Gita. Lord Krishna is saying this to Arjuna who is the warrior about to wage a war that will go down the annals of the history as the greatest war of  all– The kurukshetra war in the Mahabharata. This event took place in the year 5000 BC approximately. I shall explain this quadrant a little latter in this article.

The urge to write this article came from the very successful film “2012”. As per the Mayan calendar the end of the earth is in the year 2012 as the Mayan calendar stops at that year. There is no further calculation after that year. An Indian scientist first detects the beginning of the end in India and then the story unfolds. It is all about the much talked about apocalypse where the earth is destroyed by massive floods, earthquakes, and violent earth tremors and volcanoes. The perfect recipe for a global disaster which spares none and unleashes a trail of horror and gloom where mankind is destroyed, the earth changes its geography and everything seems to be alien to anyone who might survive such violent and devastating force. The strange thing about this impending disaster is that it has been predicted in the Vedas, as distant as 5000 years BC.

The famous quadrant  from the Bhagavad Gita,which I mentioned in the start of this article, the holy book of the Hindus, is the basis of their belief that God (Lord Vishnu) takes birth on the earth as an Avatar or incarnation and as a savior of the humanity in order to cleanse the world of evil and re-establish >Dharma or Law. The translation of the Quadrant is as follows, “Whenever there is decay of righteousness…  and there is exaltation of unrighteousness, then I Myself come forth…  for the destruction of evil-doers, for the sake of firmly establishing righteousness, I am born from age to age.”  when the human society reaches the nadir of moral and cultural values, and lose all awareness of what is right and wrong. The Vedic texts called Puranas tell the story of various Avatars of Vishnu, including his last avatar Buddha. The texts also prophesize of a future Avatar of Vishnu called Kalki who will appear at the end of the present age called the Age of Kali (untruth) or Koli Yug. Hindus believe that time revolves in a cyclical manner beginning with Satya Yug or the Age of Truth. Then comes Treta Yug, Dwapar Yug and finally Kali Yug. After that comes annihilation and re-initiation of the Satya Yug or Kritya Yug – the age of purity. Thus, the Hindus do not believe in the End of the World but in the cyclical nature of Time. The perspective of the Hindu religion is, thus, much wider than the Semitic religions and it automatically implies the fact that there were other human civilizations before the great flood, which is also mentioned in the Hindu texts. In fact there has been such global disaster in the past, like the great flood which has mention in practically all religion in the world. There were civilization before the great disaster and after the disaster the civilization again bloomed by the help of selected few ,( as in the case of Noah or in the case of manu ).

When the practices taught by the Vedas and the institutes of law, shall nearly have ceased, and the close of the Koli age shall be nigh, a portion of that Divine Being who exists of his own spiritual nature, in the character of Brahma, and who is the Beginning and the End, and who comprehends all things shall descend upon the earth.
